Educational plan
In the first year, students are required to attend seven core courses (57 ects), in the areas of law, economics, and sociology, common to all curricula
The remaining 3 ects are alternatively obtained by:
- demonstrating a basic knowledge of Italian language (level A2); or
- by other optional activities (for students having previously obtained a school or university degree in Italy).
In the second year, students can tailor their study plan, by choosing four elective courses from among those offered within one of the four curricula (24 ects), as well as one or more optional courses/activities (9 ects).
Students will also have to take an internship (150 hours - 6 ects) and write and discuss a final dissertation (21 ects).
Each student must submit an individual study plan, indicating the chosen curriculum and course, with the modalities and within the deadlines that will be determined by the didactic board. If the student will take exams different from those chosen, she/he will be given the possibility to change her/his individual study plan before graduating.
The LL.M. currently offers four curricula designed along the building blocks of sustainable development:
- Law, Economics, and Development,
- Human Rights Law and Social Development,
- Environmental Law and Policy, and
- Rule of Law.
Each curriculum offers an unusually large mix of advanced learning activities in different areas of the law, as well as in the relevant economic and sociological disciplines.
Students must choose four courses (24 ects) among those offered within the chosen curriculum.
Out of the four chosen courses, two (12 ects) must be in the areas of international, European and comparative law.
This, according to the Italian classification, means that the eligible courses belong to one of the following scientific sectors (s.s.d.) IUS/02, IUS/13, IUS/14, or IUS/21.
The scientific sector of each course can be found both in the Programme Description and in the individual page of each course in the University portal. The eligible courses are also marked with (*) in the easily accessible pdf version of the Educational Plan.
In exceptional cases, students may apply to the Teaching Board to take up to two courses belonging to a curriculum different from the chosen one, provided that:
- this is in line with the learning objectives of that curriculum, and
- the requirement of 12 ects in the areas of international, European and comparative law is met.
The credits for optional courses/activities (9 ects) are obtained by freely combining:
- Courses (6 ects) offered within any of the curricula
- Additional courses, legal clinics and workshops (3 or 6 ECTS) offered within the LL.M., and/or
- Courses (6 or 9 ects) taught in English in the Faculty of Law of the University of Milan.
