Graduating

Information for students of the LL.M.

The final exam consists of the writing and public discussion of a master’s dissertation (tesi di Laurea magistrale) in English.

The dissertation (15 000 to 20 000 words, approximately 50 pages), elaborates on a topic covered by the programme and may be developed in connection with the work done during the internship. The dissertation is an original piece of academic work written by the candidate under the supervision of a Professor of the Programme (Supervisor/Relatore).

Students having obtained the credits for taught courses, the compulsory internship, and the agreement of their supervisor can be admitted to the discussion of their final exam (21 ECTS only for students enrolled before the 2025–2026 academic year. Starting from the 2025–2026 academic year, 18 ECTS are assigned to the dissertation).

Students having completed meritorious extracurricular activities (such as additional internships, participation in Summer Schools or moots, student assistant positions), and who are not eligible for both automatic extra points, may request to be awarded an optional extra point towards their final grade.

After the master’s public defence, a final grade, expressed on a scale of 110, is assigned by the Graduation Board. It takes into account the student’s academic performance (weighted average grades of exams), extra points (automatic or optional), and the assessment of the final exam (including the dissertation and the discussion).

Further Information

Within the deadline for submitting the graduation application, graduating students can send any documentation to the Graduation Commission for the award of the two additional points provided to the Didactic Secretariat of the Faculty of Law (Via Festa del Perdono 3). by the new Regulation. You do not need to submit anything if the documents or information are already in the Student Secretariat's possession (such as: weighted average, year of enrolment, periods of study abroad).
